All Nippon Airways (ANA), Japan’s other main airline, recently released a new safety video featuring Pokémon! A good handful of the beloved pocket monsters make an appearance in the safety video as the cabin attendants, and their Pokémon friends, show you the typical safety features of the aircraft. This is the first time in the world that Pokémon have been featured in an in-flight safety video.
Let’s go, Pikachu and Eevee!
According to their website, ANA collaborated with The Pokémon Company to create this new in-flight safety video. Their goal is to appeal to everyone of all ages with a safety video that everyone will want to watch. According to Motaki Ueno, Executive VP of Customer Experience Management and Planning at ANA:

At ANA, we are committed to ensuring the safety of our passengers, and this innovative approach allows us to elevate the flight experience by combining essential safety information with engaging entertainment. This unique collaboration ensures travelers of all ages enjoy a memorable and delightful journey with us.
The safety video features both Japanese and English instructions as well as a little picture-in-picture of a person translating the instructions into Japanese Sign Language and International Sign. With these means of conveying the safety instructions, as well as having Pokémon entertaining you while you watch, I’m certain that this safety video does indeed have wide reach for all to enjoy. And more importantly–to pay attention!

Why I Absolutely Love This
I grew up in the 1990’s with Pokémon and have pretty much stayed a fan since then. Between the cartoon and the games (that were oh-so-portable via the Game Boy), I became quite the expert. I did drift away when high school and college got too busy. But several years ago, I experienced a renewal in my love and nerdiness for Pokémon with the release of Pokémon Go for smartphones and the release of Pokémon Sword and Shield. Since then, I’ve been slowly trying to catch up learning about all the Pokémon games and monsters I missed out on while I was away.
My other nerdy passion is aviation. I’m an airline kid, and my entire professional career has been related to or involved aviation. So to combine Pokémon and commercial aviation is a very cool and awesome collab for me, haha! Also…considering that I’m mostly used to American Airlines’ safety videos, which are usually just classy and adequate, I always appreciate a unique safety video.
So as both an aviation and Pokémon nerd, I totally appreciate how ANA and The Pokémon Company seamlessly incorporate unique Pokémon culture/characteristics into this safety video. I don’t care if they’re trying to appeal to everyone–this safety video very much appeals to me and makes me actually want to pay attention! Haha. Well played, ANA, well played. <3
